San Diego, CA – Dartmouth faced off against UC San Diego last weekend to start off California Tour. After a long winter of cold weather and heavy snow the Big Green were excited to play in the warm San Diego environment.
When asked about the game, Captain Hayden Aldredge stated, “It was a great way to start off our tour against a physical and quality opponent. We're greatly appreciative to UCSD Rugby for hosting us. Always awesome to get a win, but even more than just the result, we are very excited about how the team came together quickly after a long and snowy winter that saw us playing only one game.”
Even with a couple injuries and players in new positions, the Big Green came out firing against UCSD and got on the board first thanks to a great run and try from wing Luke Bienstock. A few minutes later, center Ollie Englehart, the Hong Kong boy, dummied a couple defenders and ran the ball into the try zone giving Dartmouth a 12-0 lead. A great set piece play from a 10-meter scrum led to Dartmouth’s third try, and Engelhart’s second, and a comfortable 19-0 lead about half way into the first half. Struan Coleman kept things going for Dartmouth as his heads up play off of a scrum led to another try and a 26-0 lead. A great step and line break from scrum-half Pat Sheehy led to another try and conversion for the Big Green as Dartmouth extended its lead to 33-0. With just seconds remaining in the half, full-back Max “suu” Parker ran the ball into the try zone to close out the half at 40-0.
Dartmouth kept the good times rolling in the second half thanks to a terrific run and try from Julien Johnson as Dartmouth went up 54-0. Even with a number of substitutions, Dartmouth continued its scoring frenzy thanks to a hard run from Gyorgy Brevnov who put one in the corner and extended the lead by 5. Minutes later, Ollie Englehart got his third try of the day as Dartmouth went up 64-0 on UCSD. However, a determined UCSD side did not give up and got on the board turning the score into 64-5. Both Dartmouth and UCSD closed out the half with hard-hitting defense and neither team was able to score again. The game ended with a final score of 64-5. The game proved a great start to a fun and productive tour.
