This past Saturday the DRFC took on the UConn Huskies in their second friendly test match of the fall season. The Big Green quickly took control of the game with co-captain Patrick Sheehy ’20 kicking deep into the Huskies’ 22. After a few phases of strong defensive pressure, the DRFC forced a turnover, and soon after, the ball found itself on the wing in the hands of Co-Captain Luke Bienstock who after smashing through a few defenders dotted down the first try of the half in the corner.
The kicking demonstrated by Sheehy and Jarett Lewis ’21 allowed Dartmouth to play the majority of the match in UConn’s half of the field. Their kicking, coupled with strong defensive pressure and line speed, resulted in many UConn turnovers, which allowed for more tries. Sean Dowling ’21 scored next, followed by Brendan Murphy ’21, Captain Mason Koch ’20, Dowling again, Andrew Badenhausen ‘21, Gyorgy Brevnov ’20, Will Frolich ’22, and A.J. Meyer ’22. Sheehy furthered the lead with brilliant conversions. Dartmouth closed out the first half 61-0.
The Big Green kept up their momentum in the second half with Lewis ‘21 scoring in the first few minutes off an offload from classmate Charlton McArdle ’21. Tommy Ciesla ’21 struck next with a try right under the sticks. Bienstock ’20 then scored, followed by Timothy Gerber ’21. After a penalty, UConn was able to put up 3 points off of a deep kick making the score 90-3. Before the conclusion of the second half, Joubert ’20 was able to put up one final try. Badenhausen made the conversing making the final score 98-3.
The DRFC put on a strong performance against a notable D1A team. As always, the DRFC plan to take what they learned from this match and continue to improve. They are scheduled to take on Princeton this Saturday in their first Ivy League Match. Go Big Green!
